HELIUS ANNOUNCES HUGHES CERTIFICATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF ITS NETWORK EDITION FOR DIRECPC SOLUTION FOR NOVELL® SERVERS
Resellers Benefit From New Distribution Process and Additional Platform
Support for DirecPC
LOS ANGELES March 10, 1998 Helius, Inc. today announced
that its Network Edition for DirecPC version for Novell NetWare® has
been officially certified by Hughes Network Systems (HNS) and that HNS
will begin distributing it. The Helius satellite-to-LAN Internet software
will now be carried by Insight Enterprises, Inc. It is anticipated that
other members of the DirecPC reseller network will carry the product as
well. The addition of Helius' NetWare product to DirecPC's suite of services
"is a great benefit to our business," said Tom Lapping, president
of JDL, a Network Edition for DirecPC reseller specializing in the education
market. "As a reseller, I want products that meet the needs of existing
and new customers. (Helius' NetWare product) is perfect for schools because
they need Internet solutions that work in a networked environment."
With the introduction of its award-winning DirecDuo Internet/TV satellite
dish system in 1997, HNS significantly increased the visibility of DirecPC
in the consumer market space. Now, with the addition of Helius' Novell
product, HNS has broadened the market for the DirecPC platform to include
small office/home office customers or any organization that uses local
area networks. "With Helius' NetWare product, our market opportunities
have expanded to embrace an even greater variety of networked organizations
such as businesses and schools who need lower-cost, higher-speed Internet
access," said Paul Gaske, senior vice president for HNS' Broadcast
Products and Services division. "Adding Helius' Novell solution to
our product lineup gives us one more tool to seamlessly offer DirecPC
to any kind of customer, whether stand alone or networked."
Dataquest Analyst John Coons notes the advantage to network users of
adopting a product like Helius' Novell solution, "While personal
satellite-based Internet access is very compelling to power users, sharing
this wideband connection among many occasional users provides tremendous
economic leverage while allowing each to have a more rewarding Web experience
than is possible with low-speed access methods."
Helius President Myron Mosbarger said, "Networked organizations
are choosing Helius' Novell NetWare product to connect to the Internet
because it is less expensive than a T-1 line, faster than ISDN, and available
from almost any location. Satellite data networks are not just a futuristic
technology as presented by initiatives like Teledesic and others. DirecPC
makes network satellite connectivity an affordable reality today, allowing
many organizations to benefit from high-speed, location-independent Internet
access."
Helius' NetWare product fully supports DirecPC's Turbo Internet service,
which provides download speeds up to 400 kilobits per second -- three
times faster than a 128K ISDN connection. In addition, Helius' NetWare
product supports DirecPC's Package Delivery services to provide
nation-wide, high-speed distribution of databases and other corporate
information. The software runs directly on the network server. Pricing
for the complete Network Edition for DirecPC system, including software
and hardware, starts at less than $1,600. For schools, the setup costs
and service rates qualify for Universal Services Fund E-rate subsidies.
Founded in 1995, Helius, Inc. is a privately owned, Orem, Utah-based
