HELIUS INTRODUCES SATELLITE SERVICE MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY, DISTANCE LEARNING FEATURES AND SIMPLIFIED INSTALLATION
New release cuts costs of satellite Internet service and supports IP Multicasting
to remote areas
OREM, Utah June 22, 1998 Helius continues to set the pace
for Internet access technology with its new release of Network Edition
for DirecPC, providing satellite-based Internet access to schools and
businesses virtually anywhere in North America, Europe, and Asia. Network
Edition for DirecPC version 2.1 introduces technology which dramatically
reduces the costs of satellite service by allowing an unlimited number
of internal network users to share satellite capacity much like a PBX
telephone system shares external phone lines among internal phone sets.
"With version 2.1, customers are able to control the costs of satellite
access, making it very competitive with ISDN and T-1 connections,"
said Myron Mosbarger, President of Helius, Inc. "Now high-speed Internet
access and data delivery is available virtually anywhere at rates that
are truly competitive with alternative high-speed land-based lines, which
are often not even available for remote schools and businesses."
Designed to work specifically with DirecPC network service packages,
2.1 now supports unlimited network connections on the LAN while complying
with DirecPC service plans. Helius' product is not a proxy, rather it
combines server technology upon which various proxies can reside. It supports
all WINsock and SOCKS compatible proxies and dynamically allocates Internet
resources while protecting against over usage of the DirecPC service plans.
In addition to the affordable high-speed Internet service, Network Edition
for DirecPC brings powerful distance learning features. The Windows NT
version of 2.1 provides support for real-time streaming video and audio
via IP Multicasts even if a customers' local Internet Service Provider
does not support IP Multicasting. Through an additional service, Digital
Package Delivery, sites can receive large data files at 3 Megabits per
second, all managed from the client or the network server. Since these
services are delivered via satellite they are available even in remote
locations, perfect for expanding the reach of distance learning.
The new release also offers easy installation with automatic on-line
service activation and auto-installing software. A free 30-day evaluation
copy of version 2.1 is available on the company web site www.helius.com.
Network Edition for DirecPC recently received the "InternetWeek
Approved" award and is being used to bring high-speed affordable
Internet access to many locations where T-1 or ISDN lines are either too
expensive or not even available. Examples include Avery Dennison, office
products supplier, in Diamond Bar, California; R.H. Watkins High School
in Laurel, Mississippi; Dine College in the Navajo Nation in Arizona and
the Pemberton Secondary School in the resort town of Pemberton, British
Colombia.
Network Edition for DirecPC is available from Helius and its authorized
resellers. Helius provides versions that run on Windows NT, Novell NetWare
and Linux.
Pricing for the software starts at $1,100 for schools. Setup costs and
service rates qualify for Universal Services Fund E-rate subsidies.
