ANNOUNCING HELIUS OPTIMIZED SATELLITE IP GATEWAY
Improves Performance of Interactive Internet via Satellite and Reduces
Bandwidth Costs
Orem, Utah June 21, 2000 Helius Inc. today
announced the newest in its line of Internet-via-satellite enhancement
products, the Helius Optimizedê Gateway. This IP-compliant device is designed
to improve interactive Internet services over satellite, such as browsing,
file transfer protocol (FTP), virtual private network (VPN) links, email
and other bi-directional services. As a fully compliant IP device, the
Helius Optimized Gateway can be used with any IP compliant satellite gateway
to improve performance and reduce satellite bandwidth cost.
Targeted at satellite-based service providers (SSPs) and
network operation centers (NOCs), the Helius Optimized Gateway improves
the efficiency of data transfer over satellite connections, allowing service
providers to fit more customers in their existing space segment and/or
save expenses by leasing less capacity. Helius previous work on
performance enhancements products have yielded a 200 to 400 percent improvement
in file download and browsing response times.
" Managing bandwidth costs for satellite connections is
crucial for satellite-based service providers and network operation centers,"
said Myron Mosbarger, president and chief executive of Helius. "At
the same time, however, customers demand high-quality service, which includes
fast response and fast downloads. The Helius Optimized Gateway will help
service providers meet both of these needs."
Helius has chosen to base the gateway on Calderas
OpenLinux because of its proven stability, reliability and speed. "Helius
is a key independent hardware vendor, working to bring true Linux-based
solutions to the Internet," said Drew Spencer, chief technology officer
for Caldera Systems Inc. "The Helius Optimized Gateway and Calderas
OpenLinux provide a very powerful, low-cost solution for Internet access
anywhere and anytime with reduced bandwidth and higher performance. This
is the kind of news that SSPs and NOCs have been waiting for."
Both customers and service providers need equipment
and products that are IP compliant that can be run and managed on their
local networks. There are various solutions that improve performance but
they usually impose proprietary protocols and cannot perform all the necessary
services such as VPN, Internet protocol security (IPsec), source route
address filtering, network address translation (NAT) and others. The Helius
Optimized Gateway supports all these protocols and complies with all IP
requirements for routers and Internet devices. This new product can also
be used in conjunction with existing satellite gateway products to improve
performance.
Availability
The Helius Optimized Gateway will be available during the
third quarter of 2000 and may be ordered through Helius or Helius authorized
resellers.
