HELIUS RECEIVES NOTICE OF ALLOWABILITY FOR PATENT ON SATELLITE-TO-LAN COMMUNICATIONS
Start-Up Turned Grown-Up Celebrates Fifth Anniversary with Patent Notice
OREM, Utah October 17, 2000 Helius Inc., the leading innovator
in satellite-to-local area network (LAN) connectivity, has received a
Notice of Allowability from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Helius
technology relates to communications between computers making use of digital
satellite communications channels and computer local area networks, to
provide access to the Internet, to facilitate data and software distribution,
and/or to enhance the capabilities of Intranet systems for computers with
connections to local area networks.
"This notice from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has industry-wide
implications for satellite service operators, content providers and Internet
infrastructure companies in terms of the way they might use our technology,"
said Myron Mosbarger, president and chief executive of Helius. "We
thank investors who believed in Helius in our early days and are pleased
to announce this news on our companys fifth anniversary."
Helius, a Canopy Group company, based in Orem, Utah, has captured international
attention with the release of original technology incorporated into the
Helius Satellite Router series as well as its recent strategic alliance
with electronics giant Philips Digital Networks, a business group of the
Philips Consumer Electronics division.
"We extend congratulations to Helius on the official ownership of
this intellectual property," said Ransom Love, president and chief
executive of Caldera Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CALD), a leading provider
of Linux solutions for the Internet and business. "Helius and Caldera
have worked together over the years, using Calderas OpenLinux operating
system for powerful applications such as the industrys first satellite
router running Linux."
"This patent will open up an entirely new opportunity for Helius to license
its patent to other companies that use satellite communications to pipe
the Internet to a local area network," commented Jon C. Christiansen,
patent attorney at Parsons Behle & Latimer. "Companies with computer
networks that download information from the Internet using a satellite
receiver will greatly benefit if they have a license from Helius to use
its patented technology," concluded Christiansen.
